029AE: Talent Search

Two Bowls of Pork Sinigang

Metro Manila Community Quarantine - Day 418

We're going through a bit of a hiring blitz at work, as of late, and this always adds a whole other layer of work on top of our regular duties given we're not the sort of company that has a dedicated recruitment team, or even an HR person. But it does give us a chance to meet a lot of new people and get a better sense of the sort of talent that's out there.

We're starting to run into what I can't help but call the COVID graduates - the Class of 2020. It's sort of amazing that a number of them still managed to find employment after graduation, even if just for project-based work or shorter stints. There are so many stories to be discovered between the lines of resumes and one can only hope that everyone finds a job that works out for them.

We're lucky to be hiring at all. We really had to limit our spending last year given the onset of the pandemic and we suspended all merit increases and definitely paused all hiring efforts. So it's nice to finally be back at a place where we can actually afford to hire people and create jobs despite the adversity of the times we're living right now. We can't hire everyone - that would be crazy. But even the few people we manage to onboard could still mean potentially changing someone's life and adding some great new creative talent to the team.

At the same time, we're still being very cautious. We want to grow the team, but we also don't want to over-commit to an overly high headcount that might bite us in the butt later on. The market is still a little volatile with the pandemic far from over and it's hard to accurately determine how things will be like over the next 6-18 months. We haven't had to let anyone go since the pandemic started and we don't particularly want to start now.

Here's an interesting few weeks at the very least.
