0174C: We Like What We Like

Adventure Time by Tom Preston

If you were to ask me why I like the animated TV series Adventure Time, I have to admit that I'd be a little challenged to find a logical explanation. The show has a lot of great things about it- crazy characters, random narrative flow and an intriguing back story to name a few. But I don't know if I can definitively state that one reason or another is what drives my love for the show. Even though I can't precisely explain why I love it, whether or not I love the show is not even a question.

And there are a lot of things in life that are like that - things that you are inexplicably drawn to. Many times we fall in love wit the thing first before we come up with actual reasons why. I think my appreciation for Star Trek is something like that. I fell in love with the show soon after my biological father introduced me to the show and these days I can say that my love for the show is related to its rather optimistic view of the future and the general sense of hope woven into the series. Did I just rationalize my love for the show after the fact or did my enjoyment of the program require more time to find the words describe it?

I totally feel the same way about O Bar as well. Admittedly it took me a while to warm up to the venue in contrast to the old Bed that had been my usual hangout. And these days I can't imagine hanging out anywhere else given the fabulous Oh Diva drag shows and the general sense of family we get while we're there. Sure, people argue that the music isn't "cutting edge" or something, but then they do play the kind of songs that I like and that level of comfort is really nice. I might be able to list a few reasons why O Bar is such a happy place for us, but those reasons may only work for me and not for everyone else.

We all like different things and we respond to things within the context of our individual personalities and interests. That's just part of the greater diversity of the human experience - we are all free to like different things and celebrate that love in completely different ways. And we really don't need to invest time in trying to make other people like what we like if they really don't want to. That's just how things are and that's all part of the need to give and take in life. So don't be a baby about it and grow up.
