01467: Sietch Renewal

Well, we're back online. And by online I mean via a much more reliable DSL connection. As much as we've made advances in mobile broadband technology, it can never compare to a good wired connection.

After waiting for the BayanDSL guy to arrive over the course of more than 24 without service, we finally got things back in order today. They had to fully replace our DSL modem to get things rolling along although before that we had to buy a new router since the prior one had died amid all the power cycling we had done as the first troubleshooting step. And given all this, Tobie pointed out a weird coincidence.

You could say that it started when our water dispenser died. The heating function still works but the chiller doesn't and in the interim we've just been cooling bottles of water in the fridge. It just isn't a priority purchase at this time. Then the microwave started going on the fritz. Don't worry, no sparks or anything - it just doesn't heat up anymore. We've yet to get around to replacing it, which means no microwave popcorn at this time. And then the Bayantel Wireless phone finally gave out after years of faithful service, so that sort of tied everything together.

And I almost forgot our need for a new desktop computer!

As annoyingly expensive as it is, Tobie may have a point - we seem to be going through some sort of microcosm of urban renewal, just here in the Sietch. Or at the very least, we seem to be going through a need to replace various appliances. I really don't want to read too much into things like this - it goes against the logical core of my person. But even I have to admit that things are a little hard to ignore, especially given how the most recent appliance issues seem to have happened in fairly quick succession. Tricky, tricky...

But we're on the road to recovery and I'm really happy with our new router. The setup menu is a lot friendly and it can better accommodate the way I manage our network. A network password is always a good start to protection, but I prefer to utilize MAC filtering as well. It makes accommodating guests a bit trickier at times but it makes me feel safer.

Oh, for better news at least Tobie and I had a fantastic massage night at Spa Manoli, which is just in the area. The massages were fantastic and the masseurs weren't very sleazy at all. And seriously, both Tobie and I had some significantly lingering pains here and there but we finally found some relief after our time there. We are definitely going back.

  1. Two of my laptops are already malfunctioning now... so I have a hunch that I'll have to buy a new SOON. And then, my fridge is starting to get faulty too.... aaaaah.... :| More expenses sucks.

    1. I share your pain. They just don't design gadgets to last all that long. Boo!

  2. It's nice updating appliances and other stuff though it would be difficult doing it at the same time as it would be costly.

    1. Yeah, I wish the decision to upgrade had been born more out of desire instead of necessity.

  3. technology costs a lot. if only it were that easy to upgrade, maybe we wouldnt be experiencing glitches once in a while. :) But its not an ideal world we live in. :D

    1. I suspect that gadgets these days are designed with shorter life expectancy in order to force us consumers to replace and renew accordingly.
