01263: My Facebook Timeline and Some Holiday Console Games

So Facebook's new Timeline is now available worldwide on a voluntary basis. Sign-up is simple enough and you have the option to to tinker around with your Timeline design before officially publishing it up until the worldwide auto-convert date of December 22. While I'm not exactly a big fan of Facebook, it seemed a simple enough thing to play around with today. And since I've already refined my profile page's privacy settings fairly well over the past few months, I was pretty sure that my risk of exposure was fairly minimal once I started tinkering with the settings.

Well that and I deleted over 350 contacts in order to clean up who had access to my profile for now. Most if not all of them were people with whom I've had almost zero interaction with since the time we first added one another as "friends" on Facebook and have already had very limited access to my profile since I had shunted them into the "Acquaintances" group, which has very limited visibility of my updates, photos and profile information.

For the Timeline itself, all I really did was select a Cover Photo along with changing the default apps displayed below the image. Otherwise, there really wasn't much for me to do. I tried digging into the timeline itself to try and refine what "stories" (the new term for status updates, it seems) would appear in Highlight view, things just didn't make sense to me. Even if I marked several photo albums and status updates for highlighting, once I reverted back to the less detailed view not all of the stories that I had chosen appeared. Silly Facebook algorithm.

I can see that the Timeline is not something that I'll be revisiting at length later on. Given (1) I hardly use any apps on Facebook other than an RSS feed connector to post status updates based on my blogs, (2) I have stopped posting new photos directly on Facebook given the changes to Picasa's storage limits and (3) I don't use any other the other built-in Facebook apps for marking the locations of various events (Places) nor do I post what songs I listen to via the Music app, my Timeline mostly consists of status updates via Ping.fm. So there's really not all that much personal content for me to "curate" in terms of my profile page and I don't see how the Timeline will encourage me to post more stuff on Facebook just to have something to do with it. Ah well.

In other news, my 13th month pay finally came in today. The joys of a government-mandated savings mechanism, yes? It'll help me pay off my credit card bills from my advanced Christmas purchases, which thankfully were rather efficient / effective this year compared to last year. As with all income that I earn, I remain committed to depositing 20% of my gross directly into my savings account (and yes, I realize that seems to be a rather large amount of money). It's a good way to build up your nest egg, even if I could probably afford to be more aggressive about my savings strategy. Whatever works, right?

I did indulge a bit though. We picked up a copy of Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends, only because we're total fans of the franchise and button-mashing games like this one. As long as they ensure it supports at minimum two-player local co-op, then we're good. Plus I found one last-minute gift when initially I wasn't expecting to be able to give anything.

Still weighing on whether to already purchase Rayman Origins or if I should wait a bit longer for the price to go down. The game looks decent enough and it has generally positive reviews. Plus I'll take any reason to play a co-op friendly Rayman game, yes? I'll also eventually get LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7, but after having finished the first game completely (as in 100% trophies), I know I don't need to rush to get it at full price. It can wait for the eventual discounted rate a few months down the line. Plus I need to finish the other LEGO games we purchased over the course of the year.

Oh, then there's also The Adventures of Tintin: The Game. Not sure what the gameplay is like, but having a Tintin game is rather tempting. But promised to do research the game first rather than giving into impulse.

The challenges of the holidays and your 13th month pay sitting in your bank account. Hay!

I was tempted to regularly end my blog entries with quotes from Ilustrado up until I finish the book, but that would be a rather lousy way to end such a happy post.

I'll save it for tomorrow then. =)
